The same Thai day trip is sold at prices differing by a factor of five. The itinerary is often identical — the difference is where the booking happened.
Book locally
International platforms take a large commission and price for a different expectation. A Phi Phi speedboat day trip might be €70 online and 1,200 baht — roughly €30 — booked at a shop in Ao Nang the day before.
Booking through your guesthouse or a street agency the previous day is standard practice in Thailand and normally reliable. Everyone does it, including Thais.
What to check before paying: the group size, whether lunch is included, and whether the national park fee is included — it is a separate charge of several hundred baht at some islands and is the most common surprise.

Prices vary by season and by island; these are the order of magnitude to expect.
Elephants, which need saying clearly
No riding. The training required to make an elephant accept a saddle is severe, and this is settled rather than contested.
No performances — painting, football, tricks.
Be sceptical of bathing. It has become a marketing term rather than an ethical standard: it still requires the animals to tolerate close human contact on demand, dozens of times a day.
Genuine sanctuaries keep visitors at a distance, state their rescue history, cap numbers, and let the elephants behave as elephants. They cost more, because they are not extracting labour from the animals.
What needs no tour
Temples. Entry is a few dozen baht or free, and they are self-explanatory with a dress code.
Markets and street food. Wandering is the activity.
Bangkok's river. The Chao Phraya express boat is 16–33 baht and is the best sightseeing in the city.
Chiang Mai's old city — thirty-odd temples inside a square moat, all walkable.
Most beaches, reachable by songthaew or scooter.
Where a tour earns its money
Boats. Reaching Phi Phi, Similan or James Bond Bay requires one, and joining a trip is cheaper than chartering.
Remote sites with awkward transport — Erawan Falls, the Kanchanaburi area, the Golden Triangle.
Cooking classes, which include a market visit and are among the best value activities in the country.
Two warnings
Very cheap tours ending at a shop. If the price seems impossible, the itinerary includes a gem, tailor or jewellery stop where the operator takes commission.
Scooter rental and passports. Never leave your passport as a deposit — it is a common lever in disputed damage claims. Pay a cash deposit or use a copy.
