The Riviera Maya runs two parallel economies: the one sold in hotel lobbies, and the one Mexicans use. The second costs roughly a third of the first for the same thing.
Colectivos
Shared minivans running fixed routes along the coastal highway, stopping wherever passengers ask.
Playa del Carmen to Tulum: a few dollars. A private transfer for the same journey: many times that.
They run frequently from dawn until evening, and they are how everyone who lives there travels. Stand at the roadside and wave.
ADO buses cover the longer routes — Cancún, Playa, Tulum, Valladolid, Mérida — comfortably and cheaply.
Chichén Itzá independently
By ADO bus from Cancún, Playa or Valladolid, or by rental car.
Arrive at opening. The coach parties arrive around eleven and the site transforms. This single decision improves the visit more than any tour.
The entry fee has two components and is paid at the gate.
Valladolid, forty minutes away, is a colonial town with a cenote in the middle of it and makes a far better base than the coast — cheaper, quieter, and closer to the ruins.
Ek Balam and Uxmal are quieter than Chichén Itzá and, to many people, better.
Cenotes
The famous ones near the resort corridor charge substantially. The ones inland, on ejido land, charge a few dollars or nothing.
Drive toward Valladolid and follow the signs. Cenotes Samulá, X'kekén, Suytun and dozens of unnamed ones sit off the road between Valladolid and Mérida.
Bring cash — these are village-run and do not take cards.
Rinse off sunscreen before entering; most require it, and it is genuinely damaging to the water.

What the lobby price buys is transport, a guide and lunch. Sometimes that is worth it. Frequently it is a colectivo ride with a markup.
The timeshare pitch
An offer of heavily discounted tours, free transfers or free excursions in exchange for attending a presentation.
The discounts are real. The presentation typically runs several hours under sustained pressure rather than the ninety minutes advertised, and leaving early is made difficult.
It costs a day of a short holiday. Decide with that in mind.
Approaches also happen at the airport, where booths presenting themselves as tourist information are selling this.
Where to actually stay
Playa del Carmen or Tulum town — as distinct from the Tulum beach road, which is expensive and often has no mains power or water connection.
Valladolid or Mérida for the inland trip, at a fraction of coastal prices.
Isla Holbox or Isla Mujeres for islands without the resort strip.
All-inclusive resorts make sense only if you intend to stay inside them. If you plan to leave, you are paying twice for every meal.
